THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME [VOL 2] June 28 2012

1. My new notebook. I have found myself with only three pages left in my current Moleskine and an Amazon order that won’t get delivered til next week. I bought the one below a long time ago. It’s The Little Prince edition - one of my favorite childhood books. I thought I’d never open it, but I guess it’s fitting that I do. I’m taking new journeys and thinking up new ideas all the time. Since the book taught me that I am only limited by my imagination, I might as well put that to the test.

2. Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. Sure there’s nutritional value to that statement, but for me, it’s about taking time. Every morning I have breakfast and read the LA Times. I can easily get the news online or on my phone, but I’m in front of those two things most of the day. There is something tangible about reading the paper front to back; it’s like my disconnect from technology. It’s also my chance to get the day started mentally, the calm before the storm, if you will.

3. San Francisco. I have a love affair with that city, and I’ve made it known to you on the blog. I frequent it throughout the year and I’ll be there again this weekend. When I run interviews on artists or brands or whatever, I often ask the question “What inspires you?”. But somehow, inspiration finds me in San Francisco. I can’t quite describe how that happens. Maybe it’s the weather, the people, the rhythm, the fact that I let go when I’m there, I don’t know. I’ll actually be spending time in San Jose first (for Tastemakers and for Jon’s show), and then off to SF for the rest of the time.

4. Blogs. Specifically the blogs I write for: CA, Rick & Ray, and Tastemakers. CA just surpassed 14 million hits the other day. To think that I started this 5 and a half years ago with one reader and an ignorance for the blogosphere, that’s pretty fucking cool. Rick & Ray has a Tumblr. I update that with artist and event news because it’s a separate entity from the official website. It’s like a personal effort so that readers maintain interaction with us. Tastemakers is quickly making noise. Besides the backing it has, the authors, the style of writing, and the name have already become recognizable. The trick with blogs is to be consistent. That’s actually the trick to a lot of things in life. In terms of blogs though, consistency translates into relevance. Keep going. (Photo courtesy of someone’s Tumblr. I found it and thought, ‘Hey! That’s my daily task list!’)

5. Pixar short films. I watched Brave last weekend. Solid movie; I like UP better. But La Luna, the short film that preceded it, was fantastic. I think out of all that have been released, that has to be my favorite. To animate a story that can be told in 5 minutes with that much impact is no small feat. (Photo courtesy of Disney/Pixar)
